THE ASTAIRE DRESS

At Stevenson University, the Film and Moving Image Department holds an annual awards ceremony, similar to that of the Grammys, and goes all-out with extravagant decor and a red carpet. Given the dress code and fancy setting, I wanted to create a garment fitting for a movie red carpet event. Naming it "The Astaire Dress", I gave a nod to Fred Astaire and classic Hollywood.

MY PROCESS

01
CREATING A MOOD BOARD

I wanted my dress to reflect something from film, to suit the event.

02

SKETCHING AND PLANNING

After three rounds of sketching, I settled for a corset dress with a side-gathered skirt, draping the velvet across the bust as a cowl neck.

03
CREATING A MUSLIN CUT

The muslin cut went fairly quickly, as I had a solid plan on how to approach everything.

FINAL PRODUCT

TAKEAWAYS

Through this project, I learned the importance of testing all elements of a muslin cut. Not only did I have to alter my skirt patterns, but I completely changed the design of the back before moving to the final cut. Considering the dress form I used for draping isn't exactly the same size as me, I had to make a lot of small alterations to ensure it would fit me properly.
