THE GINGER JACKET
At Stevenson University, the Film and Moving Image Department holds an annual awards ceremony, similar to that of the Grammys, and goes all-out with extravagant decor and a red carpet. Given the dress code and fancy setting, I wanted to create a garment fitting for a movie red carpet event. I named it "The Ginger Jacket" after Ginger Rogers, giving a subtle nod to Classic Hollywood.
MY PROCESS
01
SKETCHING AND PLANNING

I was isnpired by a roll of plastic film reel I found on Amazon. I wanted something classy and reminiscent of the Golden Age, with small embellishments using the film strip and a natural color-scheme to embody old films.
03
CREATING A MUSLIN CUT

Since I have never made a jacket before, I had to move slowly with creating a muslin cut. I tailored the bodice first before experimenting with the sleeves, so that I wouldn't have to completely deconstruct it to make alterations.
FINAL PRODUCT

TAKEAWAYS
Through this project, I learned how to work with finer fabric. With suit lining and satin, I had to be meticulous when sewing my pieces together, ensuring nothing was slipping during the process. This project also helped improve my hand sewing techniques since I had to attach all of the film strip on by hand.
